The town of Shoreham is situated on the coastal strip of Sussex half way between Brighton and Worthing with good road and rail links to North, East and West. The population is approximately 24,000 (2011 census) whilst St Nicolas’ Parish is just under 7,000.
Shoreham forms part of the Hove Deanery with four parishes; St Nicolas' Old Shoreham, St Mary de Haura New Shoreham, Kingston Buci and Shoreham Beach. St Nicolas’ Old Shoreham, and St Julian's and St Giles' in the parish of Kingston Buci, form a combined benefice.
St Nicolas’ lies to the Northwest of the town, on the edge of the South Downs National Park, close to the River Adur.
